Planning a trip to Japan is exciting — and a little overwhelming. Whether it's your first time or your fifth, there are so many tickets and reservations to sort out before you even board your flight.

Beyond the basics (flights, hotels, and train passes), some of Japan's most beloved attractions require advance booking — think Tokyo Disney Resort, Ghibli Park & Museum, the Pokémon Cafe, and more.

Spots fill up fast, so this isn't something you want to leave to chance.

Before you start purchasing tickets, though, there's one step I always recommend first: map out a rough itinerary.

Here's why it matters — almost all advance reservations require you to choose a specific date, and sometimes a specific time. Without at least a general sense of how your trip will flow, it's easy to book things on the wrong days or overpack your schedule.

A few things to keep in mind as you plan:

→ Don't try to cram in back-to-back experiences. Japan rewards a slower pace. Plan your day around one main attraction or neighborhood, and leave room to wander and explore what's around you — some of the best moments happen that way.

→ Check for closures, construction, and holidays BEFORE you book anything. It would be such a bummer to lock in tickets and then discover that an attraction is closed on the exact day you had planned for it.
